The CIPIC HRTF Database

The CIPIC HRTF Database is a public-domain database of high-spatial-resolution HRTF measurements for 45 different subjects, including the KEMAR mannequin with both small and large pinnae.

The database includes 2,500 measurements of head-related impulse responses for each subject. These "standard" measurements were recorded at 25 different interaural-polar azimuths and 50 different interaural-polar elevations. Additional "special" measurements of the KEMAR manikin were made for the frontal and horizontal planes. In addition, the database includes anthropometric measurements for use in HRTF scaling studies, technical documentation, and a utility program for displaying and inspecting the data. Accessing the data requires MATLAB 5x or greater. Additional details are given in the following paper:

V. R. Algazi, R. O. Duda, D. M. Thompson and C. Avendano, "The CIPIC HRTF Database," Proc. 2001 IEEE Workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Electroacoustics, pp. 99-102, Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY, Oct. 21-24, 2001.

The size of the complete database is approximently 180 MBytes. Instructions for downloading the entire database or certain selected portions of it are given below. Alternatively, if you would like to sample it first, Prof. David C. Mountain of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University has made the database conveniently available for inspection online at EarLab at Boston University, "Special Collection Searches"

Interested researchers with fast Internet connections are requested to obtain the data via http download. A limited number of CD-ROMs have been prepared for those who have a serious interest in the entire database but who cannot download such large files. If that describes your situation, please mail a please mail a written request on institutional letterhead that includes both your mailing address and your e-mail address to:

database are now made available.

Matlab code for show_data: The Matlab code has been updates to be
compatible with all versions of Matlab up to R2011A.

Full Database download

The entire CIPIC HRTF Database contains the most recent version of the data, software, and documentation.

For a zip file of the entire CIPIC HRTF database click here Note! ~170MB!

For a image file of the entire CIPIC HRTF database right click here Note! ~180MB! This binary file can be used to burn a CD of the CIPIC Database. Be sure to save with a right click as some software tries to view the data as a text file.

CDR inserts in PDF format can be downloaded here. Back Cover and Front Cover

Partial Database Download

Software: Show_data is a collection of Matlab files that can be used to view the "standard" CIPIC HRIR files. The manual for the show_data program can be found in the documentation directory. Note! You need Matlab 5.x or higher to use. And while we have tried to make it bug free :-) we can offer no support.

For a tar file of the updated show_data software click here. updated 8/11/04.

The HRTF data inspection program show_data was developed using Matlab 6.0. If you experience Matlab problems using a later release, replace the m-files in the show_data directory with the ones in this tar file.

Data: KEMAR data for both large and small pinna is available in two formats. "Standard", which is also the format used with our human subjects, consists of measurements recorded at 25 different interaural-polar azimuths and 50 different interaural-polar elevations. The "Special" data set was made at equally spaced intervals for the frontal and horizontal planes. For more information please see the documentation.

The "standard" KEMAR data for large and small pinna is in a tar file here

The "special" KEMAR data is in a tar file here

2012 Revision: Click here to download the folder 2012_Rev that contains the pinna images, the updated show_data code and a read_me file. Note that the updated show_data code should replace the old version.

Documentation Download

The doc directory includes several documents. They are:

  • Documentation for the UCD HRIR files. The documentation includes descriptions of the geometry and coordinate systems.
  • The user manual for the show_data program.
  • Description of the anthropometric parameters in the database.
  • The Revision history.
  • The "WASPAA" Paper referenced above.
