Born in France, I received a traditional French secondary education. After graduation from SUPELEC, an electrical and radio engineering school in Paris, and service in the French Air Force, I came to the USA in 1954 to attend graduate school at MIT.

On the University of California, Davis, since 1965, I have served as Chairman of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department for 10 years from 1975 to 1986 during the rapid growth of the department. I have mentored a large number of graduate students at both the M.S. and Ph.D. Level. In 1976 I founded at UC Davis the Image Processing Facility (IPF), a campus facility for research. I was the originator and founding director of an interdisciplinary research center, CIPIC, Center for Image Processing and Integrated Computing founded in 1989. In 1994, I retired from the regular faculty ranks and was appointed Research Professor. I direct the CIPIC Interface laboratory that can be visited at http://interface.cipic.ucdavis.edu. I have organized a number of international symposia in picture coding and very high quality imaging. My research interests have ranged from communications and signal processing to image processing and compression, speech and sound processing and their applications. My research has centered, for several years, on the use of properties of human perception in design of processing algorithms for the display, transmission and storage of images, speech and sound. For a number of years, I collaborated with Professor Makoto Miyahara, of the Japan Avanced Institute of Technology, JAIST, in the development of perception based image distortion measures. For the past several years the focus of my research has been on spatial sound that is carried out in collaboration with Richard O. Duda at the CIPIC Interface laboratory. Personal Information: Married for more than 40 years to my wife Margaret, I have two sons, Andre and Alain, and a grandson Ryan.
